Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake 15 miles southwest of Santa Monica, California, United States

4.2 quake 25 Jan 2:00 am (GMT -8)
4.2 quake 25 Jan 2:00 am (GMT -8)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred early morning on Wednesday, January 25th, 2023, at 2:00 am local time near Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 9.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Malibu (pop. 13,000) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Santa Monica (pop. 93,200) 15 miles away, Redondo Beach (pop. 68,200) 18 miles away, Hawthorne (pop. 88,500) 20 miles away, Inglewood (pop. 111,700) 20 miles away, Torrance (pop. 148,500) 21 miles away, Thousand Oaks (pop. 129,300) 21 miles away, and Carson (pop. 93,300) 24 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Los Angeles (pop. 3,971,900) located 28 miles from the epicenter, and Long Beach (pop. 474,100) 30 miles away.
