Moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake 83 km southwest of Tbilisi, Georgia

4.0 quake 1 Mar 2:52 pm (GMT +4)
4.0 quake 1 Mar 2:52 pm (GMT +4)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 16 minutes ago 83 km southwest of Tbilisi, Georgia, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 3.9 km beneath the epicenter near Tbilisi, K'alak'i T'bilisi, Georgia, early afternoon on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023, at 2:52 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gorelovk'a (pop. 700) located 26 km from the epicenter, and Ninotsminda (pop. 6,100) 33 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Akhalkalaki (pop. 9,800) located 42 km from the epicenter, Step'anavan (pop. 23,800) 48 km away, Luxemburg (pop. 13,800) 49 km away, Hasuri (pop. 27,800) 82 km away, Tbilisi (pop. 1,049,500) 83 km away, and Rustavi (pop. 50,000) 88 km away.
