Moderate yet deep 5.1 quake hits near Pucon, Provincia de Cautín, Region de la Araucania, Chile

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Pucon, Provincia de Cautín, Region de la Araucania, Chile, was reported only 19 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 104 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Tuesday 29 December 2020 at 4:29 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pucon (pop. 27,000) located 6 km from the epicenter, Villarrica (pop. 31,600) 24 km away, Panguipulli (pop. 16,300) 47 km away, Loncoche (pop. 15,600) 58 km away, Pitrufquén (pop. 13,700) 70 km away, Freire (pop. 7,800) 72 km away, Vilcun (pop. 9,200) 78 km away, and Temuco (pop. 238,100) 87 km away.
