Light earthquake of magnitude 4.6 just reported 87 km southeast of Madang, Papua New Guinea

Just 28 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Madang, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. The tremor was recorded around noon on Thursday 21 January 2021 at 12:56 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 67 km below the surface.

The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Madang (pop. 27,400) located 87 km from the epicenter, and Kainantu (pop. 8,500) 103 km away.
