Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 65 km southwest of Tonala, Mexico

4.8 quake 12 Mar 5:25 am (GMT -6)

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Mexico near Tonala, Tonalá, Chiapas, only 16 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Friday 12 March 2021 at 5:25 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Portillo Guayaba (pop. 10) located 31 km from the epicenter, Chahuite (pop. 9,800) 52 km away, Paredon (pop. 6,100) 52 km away, San Pedro Tapanatepec (pop. 7,400) 59 km away, Arriaga (pop. 24,400) 61 km away, Tonala (pop. 35,300) 65 km away, and Las Amilpas (pop. 8,800) 66 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Juchitan de Zaragoza (pop. 74,800) located 100 km from the epicenter, and Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) 101 km away.
