A very shallow magnitude 2.7 earthquake was reported in the evening near Redding, Shasta County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday 13 March 2021 at 9:57 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lakehead (pop. 460) located 2 miles from the epicenter. In Shasta Lake (pop. 10,200, 16 miles away), Bella Vista (pop. 2,800, 21 miles away), Redding (pop. 91,600, 22 miles away), Mount Shasta (pop. 3,300, 28 miles away), and Anderson (pop. 10,200, 32 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
