An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred only 13 minutes ago 42 km northeast of Miyako, Japan, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 57 km beneath the epicenter near Miyako, Miyako-shi, Iwate, Japan, early evening on Saturday 24 April 2021 at 6:35 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Miyako (pop. 51,700) located 42 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yamada (pop. 20,100) located 61 km from the epicenter, Ōtsuchi (pop. 16,500) 73 km away, Hachinohe (pop. 239,000) 76 km away, Kamaishi (pop. 43,100) 84 km away, Morioka (pop. 295,200) 89 km away, Tōno (pop. 26,800) 91 km away, and Misawa (pop. 42,800) 98 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
