The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.0 quake in the United States near Pāhala, Hawaii County, Hawaii, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Friday 30 April 2021 at 5:33 am local time at a very shallow depth of 0.2 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 3 miles from the epicenter. In Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400, 18 miles away), Volcano Village (pop. 2,600, 26 miles away), Honaunau-Napoopoo (pop. 2,600, 29 miles away), Holualoa (pop. 8,500, 40 miles away), and Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 46 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
