4.2 quake 5 May 10:47 pm (GMT -5)
An intermediate magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported late at night near Cintalapa de Figueroa, Cintalapa, Chiapas, Mexico.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Wednesday 5 May 2021 at 10:47 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 144 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Cuatro de Agosto (pop. 16, 5 km away), Cintalapa de Figueroa (pop. 42,500, 30 km away), Lazaro Cardenas (pop. 3,000, 32 km away), Jiquipilas (pop. 9,900, 37 km away), Raudales Malpaso (pop. 6,800, 52 km away), El Espinal (pop. 7,600, 56 km away), Ocozocoautla de Espinosa (pop. 39,200, 61 km away), Arriaga (pop. 24,400, 68 km away), and Tuxtla Gutiérrez (pop. 537,100, 89 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
