Papua New Guinea was shaken near Arawa, Bougainville, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 17 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
5.0 quake 9 May 4:42 pm (GMT +11)
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 102 km beneath the epicenter near Arawa, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, in the afternoon on Sunday 9 May 2021 at 4:42 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Panguna (pop. 2,900) located 90 km from the epicenter, Arawa (pop. 40,300) 98 km away, and Kieta (pop. 3,600) 105 km away.
