Moderate 4.2 quake hits near Portoviejo, Cantón Portoviejo, Provincia de Manabi, Ecuador

Just 9 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Portoviejo, Cantón Portoviejo, Provincia de Manabi, Ecuador. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Tuesday 11 May 2021 at 12:12 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 7 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Rocafuerte (pop. 10,300) located 0 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Portoviejo (pop. 170,300) located 15 km from the epicenter, Montecristi (pop. 18,400) 27 km away, Manta (pop. 183,200) 30 km away, Calceta (pop. 17,300) 33 km away, and Bahia de Caraquez (pop. 37,100) 36 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chone (pop. 44,800) located 47 km from the epicenter, and Jipijapa (pop. 35,900) 50 km away.
