Another large earthquake hit Chile's western coast yesterday evening at 9:16 pm local time. The quake was at 25 km depth and had its epicenter 12 km SE of Tongoy in the region of Coquimbo, 430 km north of Santiago.
Strong shaking occurred on the ground in areas of up to 50 km distance from the epicenter, but light to weak shaking could be felt in a vast area up to several hundred kilometers distance.
There are no reports of injuries or significant damage, mostly due to the fact that there are no towns in the immediate vicinity of the quake.
A similar, but stronger magnitude 7 quake had occurred 5 days earlier 266 km to the north. It could be that earthquakes currently propagate southwards along the Pacific - South American tectonic plate margin.
