An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred 1 hour and 26 minutes ago 122 km east of Carolina, British Virgin Islands, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4 km beneath the epicenter in the early afternoon on 22 October at 3.27 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change within the next hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Charlotte Amalie (pop. 20,000) at a distance of 76 km with very weak shaking, Road Town (pop. 8,400) at a distance of 78 km with very weak shaking, Fajardo (pop. 34,100) at a distance of 102 km with very weak shaking, Carolina (pop. 170,400) at a distance of 122 km.
