An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 7 minutes ago 70 km south of Manta, Ecuador, the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday 4 November 2020 at 2.46 am local time. The magnitude, exact location of the epicenter, and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Jipijapa (pop. 35,900) located 36 km from the epicenter, Paján (pop. 9,200) 40 km away, Sucre (pop. 15,300) 54 km away, Montecristi (pop. 18,400) 62 km away, Santa Ana (pop. 12,800) 63 km away, Portoviejo (pop. 170,300) 70 km away, Manta (pop. 183,200) 70 km away, and La Libertad (pop. 75,900) 73 km away.
