An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred early morning on Sunday 8 November 2020 at 5.46 am local time near the village of San Antonio, Peru, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 45.1 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Antonio (pop. 300) located 7 km from the epicenter, San Miguel (pop. 100) 8 km away, Villa Alegre (pop. 100) 10 km away, Reino Unido (pop. 200) 11 km away, Soledad (pop. 600) 14 km away, Moyobamba (pop. 44,300) 47 km away, Rioja (pop. 25,100) 65 km away, and Yurimaguas (pop. 41,800) 66 km away.
