Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Padang, Indonesia
5.2 quake Southern Sumatra, Indonesia, 18 Nov 11.41 am (GMT +7)
A shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported in the morning near the city of Padang, Indonesia.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Wednesday 18 November 2020 at 11.41 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Padang (pop. 840,400) located 110 km from the epicenter, Sungai Penuh (pop. 95,900) 119 km away, Solok (pop. 48,400) 132 km away, Pariaman (pop. 92,200) 149 km away, Sijunjung (pop. 27,800) 156 km away, Bukittinggi (pop. 98,700) 181 km away, and Payakumbuh (pop. 121,600) 195 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
