Light 4.2 quake hits near Nazca, Peru

An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred 1 hour and 49 minutes ago 91 km southeast of Nazca, Peru, the Geophysics Institute of Peru (IGP) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 68 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday 18 November 2020 at 5.31 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Chaviña (pop. 200) located 13 km from the epicenter, and Acarí (pop. 4,400) 27 km away.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Atiquipa (pop. 100) located 46 km from the epicenter, San Juan (pop. 12,800) 52 km away, Minas de Marcona (pop. 15,500) 60 km away, Santa Luisa (pop. 100) 74 km away, Chicalle (pop. 200) 76 km away, and Nazca (pop. 23,600) 91 km away.
