Just 36 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Atico, Peru. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Tuesday 24 November 2020 at 3.21 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 38 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Atico (pop. 200) located 14 km from the epicenter, Pescadores (pop. 300) 38 km away, Urasqui (pop. 200) 39 km away, Piuca (pop. 400) 40 km away, La Planchada (pop. 500) 41 km away, Ispacas (pop. 800) 77 km away, San Jacinto (pop. 900) 99 km away, and Camaná (pop. 16,400) 100 km away.
