A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Végueta was reported 1 hour and 20 minutes ago by the Geophysics Institute of Peru (IGP), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Peru. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 41 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Thursday 26 November 2020 at 12.37 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Végueta (pop. 6,200) located 35 km from the epicenter, Caleta de Carquin (pop. 5,500) 35 km away, Centinela Sur (pop. 100) 36 km away, Carquin Bajo (pop. 100) 37 km away, Hualmay (pop. 26,700) 37 km away, Huacho (pop. 54,500) 38 km away, Barranca (pop. 46,300) 46 km away, and Huaral (pop. 62,200) 91 km away.
