Just 12 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Ruteng, Kabupaten Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Thursday 14 January 2021 at 8:03 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ruteng (pop. 34,600) located 58 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Labuan Bajo (pop. 188,700) located 74 km from the epicenter.
