Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.3 quake in Mexico near Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, 31 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Monday 8 February 2021 at 12:44 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In El Laurel (pop. 43) located 5 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Raudales Malpaso (pop. 6,800) located 15 km from the epicenter, Copainala (pop. 6,600) 30 km away, Ocozocoautla de Espinosa (pop. 39,200) 41 km away, and Berriozabal (pop. 28,100) 42 km away.
