Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 reported 38 km northeast of Hihifo, Tonga4.9 quake 8 Feb 7:56 pm (GMT +13)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred early evening on Monday 8 February 2021 at 7:56 pm local time near Hihifo, Niuas, Tonga, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 32.4 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hihifo (pop. 820) located 38 km from the epicenter.
