Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 40 km southwest of Kupang, Indonesia4.8 quake 13 Feb 11:19 pm (GMT +8)
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Indonesia near Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Saturday 13 February 2021 at 11:19 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kupang (pop. 282,400) located 40 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Soe (pop. 27,700) located 110 km from the epicenter.
