A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported around noon near Agia Marina, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Wednesday 24 February 2021 at 12:51 pm local time at a shallow depth of 22.9 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Agia Marina (pop. 440) located 27 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Karpathos (pop. 2,200) located 48 km from the epicenter, Palekastro (pop. 1,100) 58 km away, Sitia (pop. 8,700) 67 km away, Elounda (pop. 2,200) 94 km away, and Aghios Nicolaos (pop. 11,400) 98 km away.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
