The recent 4.7 earthquake which occurred 29 km southwest of Reykjavic , Iceland, was only one of the quakes which exceeded a magnitude 4.0. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) the ongoing earthquake swarm in Iceland produced the largest quake they have felt at magnitude 5.7, last 24 Feb. 2021. Since that quake they have recorded 20+ quakes above magnitude 4.0, and 100+ quakes above magnitude 3.0. A total of over 7,200 quakes were recorded since the start of the swarm last 19 Feb. 2021.
The satellite image above from the Sentinel-1 interferogram spanning the period of 19-25 Feb. 2021, shows tectonic plate movements between the North American and the Eurasian Plates. Red amplitudes represent movement towards the satellite and purple amplitudes represent movement away from the satellite. The arrow lines show this movement direction. The red star shows the location of the magnitude 5.7 quake last 24 Feb.
The IMO stated that these seismic activities are part of the ongoing volcano-tectonic reactivation of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Although no shallow magmatic intrusions or inflow of magma have been observed yet, the IMO is on the constant lookout for them

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 hit near the Iceland capital of Reykjavik on 28 Feb. 2021, at 12:19 am local time. The quake occurred 29 km southwest of Reykjavik, at a shallow depth of 5.3 km. This quake is a part of the ongoing earthquake swarms in southwest Iceland.
Within minutes after the quake, we received numerous user reports mostly from the city of Reykjavik describing light to moderate shaking. Some of them also reported rattling of beds and windows. The quake should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.6.
The quake was felt in Vogar (pop. 1000) located 10 km from the epicenter, Hafnarfjordur (pop. 26,800) 22 km away, Hafnarfjörður (pop. 26,800) 22 km away, Garðabaer (pop. 11,400) 24 km away, and Garðabær (pop. 11,400) 24 km away, Kopavogur (pop. 31,700) located 26 km from the epicenter, Seltjarnarnes (pop. 4,300) 28 km away, Reykjavik (pop. 118,900) 29 km away, Mosfellsbaer (pop. 8,700) 38 km away, and Mosfellsbær (pop. 8,700) 38 km away.
