An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred in the morning on Thursday 4 March 2021 at 7:34 am local time near Isla, Veracruz, Mexico, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 28 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Isla (pop. 26,300) located 13 km from the epicenter, Carlos A. Carrillo (pop. 18,000) 38 km away, Cosamaloapan (pop. 30,600) 41 km away, San Andrés Tuxtla (pop. 61,800) 45 km away, Catemaco (pop. 27,600) 51 km away, Acayucan (pop. 50,900) 64 km away, and San Juan Bautista (pop. 101,800) 67 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Minatitlan (pop. 112,000) located 100 km from the epicenter.
