Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 70 km southwest of Tapachula, Mexico early morning
5.0 quake 7 Mar 1:38 am (GMT -6)
5.0 quake 7 Mar 1:38 am (GMT -6)
Mexico was shaken near Tapachula, Chiapas, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 13 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico, early morning on Sunday 7 March 2021 at 1:38 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In San José el Hueyate (Barra de San José) (pop. 760) located 38 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Madero (pop. 9,600) located 48 km from the epicenter, Mazatan (pop. 6,800) 50 km away, Huixtla (pop. 32,000) 67 km away, Tapachula (pop. 202,700) 70 km away, Brisas Barra de Suchiate (pop. 13,700) 71 km away, Frontera Diaz (pop. 14,600) 77 km away, Cacahoatan (pop. 16,600) 83 km away, and Mapastepec (pop. 17,900) 84 km away.
