Erupciones del volcán Etna:
Near continuously active; some major historic eruptions include 122 BC (large Plinian outbursts that created the small caldera of the "Cratere del Piano"), 1669 AD (devastating flank eruption that destroyed 15 villages and part of Catania), 1787 (Subplinian eruption and one of the most spectacular summit eruptions on record - lava fountains reportedly up to 3000 m high).Eruptions since 1950 (f: flank / s: summit activity):

Typical eruption style:
Efusivas (coladas de lava) y ligeramente explosivo (estromboliana) erupciones. Tanto cumbre y frecuentes erupciones de flanco, el último parece estar ocurriendo en racimos que duran unos pocos a unas pocas decenas de años.

Etna volcano updates and eruption news:
lun, 14 nov 2005, 16:49
As our correspondant Rosario from Etna volcano reports, there is deep-seated explosive activity audible from within the W vent of Bocca Nuova and the NE crater. The other vents are more or less blocked. Resuming of visible eruptive activity could happen at any time.

As the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reports, an increased number of small to medium earthquakes have occurred lately at Etna volcano, the largest one being today (Sun, 30 Oct. 05) at 3.7 magnitude Richter at 08h06 on the southeastern slopes near Pedara, Trecastagni et Nicolosi. Etna has been without eruptive activity since March 2005; new eruptions are expected within a near to medium future (months or few years, possibly less if the recent seismic activity is taken as possible precursor).

A visit of the VolcanoDiscovery group on Etna's summit craters found no visible activity from any of the summit craters and no fresh deposits of activity in the recent past. Read more...

Since February the subterminal south east crater has undergone to several rock slidings of its inner walls and a large collapse pit has formed on the E side of the cone.

During the past week, lava emission from the last active vent at 2620 m elevation has ceased completely and the effusive eruption that started in early Sept. 2004 is likely to be over.
Sporadic ash emission from the SE crater continues, and weak seismicity above average level is being recorded below the summit area of the volcano at 5-10 km depth. Renewed activity in the following weeks or months is very likely.

As the INGV reports, Etna's SE crater has resumed its emissions of dense black ash on the morning of the 24th.-
The SE crater, the youngest of Etna's 4 summit craters, had been the site of vigourous activity throughout much of 1998-2001, but remained quiet after the end of the July-August 2001 summit and flank eruption. In early 2005, sporadic ash emissions resumed, sometimes accompanied by visible glow at night, indicating that magma once more has risen inside its conduit. More spectacular activity from this crater might follow during the next weeks or months.

As our colleague Charles Rivière reports, some new activity from the summit craters occurred today at around 3pm local time,- probably from the SE crater which had shown minor, sporadic ash emissions in the past weeks already, of Etna . The activity could not be observed because of bad weather conditions, but was registered by the seismic network of the INGV (the Italian volcanology research council). Fall of black, fresh ash was observed to the SE of the volcano including the city of Catanaia.

Land of Volcanoes & History
: Armenia, a small country in the South Caucasus, has a long dramatic history and a rich cultural heritage. Despite its compact territory, it has much to offer its guests: fascinating mountain landscapes with snowy volcano peaks, beautiful gorges and cliffs, alpine meadows and subtropical forests, monasteries hidden in valleys, archaeological sites and picturesque villages.
