Soufrière Hills, Montserrat: volcano news & activity updates
Over the past weeks, the lava dome continued to grow at Soufrière Hills, mainly on the SW part of the dome. Rockfalls and pyroclastic flows occurred on the S side of the dome and in the upper parts of both White's and Tuitt's Ghauts. On 23 and 24 December, ash plumes rising to 3 km were observed and MVO reported that the emissions originated from a vent on the W side of the dome. A small pyroclastic flow was visible NW in the upper reaches of Tyre's Ghaut and venting became more energetic. The alert level was raised to 4 (on a scale of 0-5). During 17-24 November, lava-dome growth at Soufrière Hills continued and was concentrated on the NE part of the edifice. Ash venting originated from the westernmost of two cracks in the curved back of the shear E-facing lobe on the summit. Rockfalls and small pyroclastic flows traveled down the SW and NE flanks. Pyroclastic flows reached both the upper region of Tuitts Ghaut (N) and the sea via the Tar River Valley (E) on 23 November. The lava dome at Soufrière Hills continues to grow (mainly in the E part) and produce rockfalls and smal pyroclastic flows that travel down the SW and NE flanks.
During 27 October-3 November, lava-dome growth at Soufrière Hills continued and was concentrated on the E and NE part of the edifice. Rockfalls and small pyroclastic flows originating from the active lobe traveled down the NE flank. Visual observations show that the dome has continued to grow at a moderate rate during the reporting period. Growth appears to have occurred predominantly in the summit area, on the eastern side of the dome, with a prominent lobe growing in this location. The vents which became active at the end of August, one situated just inside Gage’s wall and the other situated on the summit of the dome, remain active, periodically producing both ash and gases. There have also been a number of pyroclastic flows during the reporting period, some of which appear to have had explosive onsets. Visual observations show that the dome has grown substantially during the past week, with the main focus of growth being on the western part of the edifice. The two vigorous vents that opened on 31 August are still active. The one above the Gage’s wall is emitting a plume of hot gases, the more northerly vent, near the summit of the dome, is producing mostly ash and steam....màs
During the past week, Montserrat's volcano has been more active again and produced pyroclastic flows that may have reached the sea....màs
The lava dome at Soufrière Hills continues to grow at moderate rate. No significant pyroclastic flows have occurred over the past weeks.
Dome growth appears to have continued, and visual observations on Thursday 27 July revealed that the blocky spine - first observed on 21 July - remains intact, although leaning to the east, It is also is also now one of a number of spines along the crest of the dome (crest orientation approximately south to north)....màs [leer todo]
Dome growth (and rockfall activity) appears to have been focused to the NE and visual observations on the morning of Friday 21 July showed that the dome has grown markedly during the reporting period. It now has an asymmetric profile, with a blocky spine on the northeast end. The height of the spine was estimated at 895 m on Tuesday 18 July....màs
