New Britain island sits on the southern end of the South Bismark Sea plate.
The volcanoes on New Britain belong to the 1000 km long Bismarck Volcanic Arc which overlies the northward subducting Solomon Sea plate, a small ocean basin that is rapidly disappearing underneath the South Bismarck Sea plate to the north. .
