Significant 5.7 quake hits near Sarajevo, Sarajevo Canton, Federation of B&H, Bosnia & Herzegovina

5.7 quake 22 Apr 11:07 pm (GMT +2)
5.7 quake 22 Apr 11:07 pm (GMT +2)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred only 25 minutes ago 88 km south of Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Sarajevo, Sarajevo Canton, Federation of B&H, Bosnia & Herzegovina, late at night on Friday, April 22nd, 2022, at 11:07 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which listed it as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.6, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.7, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.7.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Stolac (pop. 7,700) located 19 km from the epicenter, Nevesinje (pop. 7,300) 23 km away, and Bileća (pop. 13,300) 28 km away.
In Trebinje (pop. 33,200) located 41 km from the epicenter, Mostar (pop. 104,500) 44 km away, and Sarajevo (pop. 696,700) 88 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Podgorica (pop. 236,900) located 111 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
