Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.8 just reported 32 km southeast of Babahoyo, Ecuador

5.8 quake 14 Jul 5:30 pm (GMT -5)
5.8 quake 14 Jul 5:30 pm (GMT -5)
A shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Babahoyo, Cantón Babahoyo, Provincia de Los Rios, Ecuador.
According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Thursday, July 14th, 2022, at 5:30 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.8, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.8.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Montalvo (pop. 15,500) located 17 km from the epicenter, Babahoyo (pop. 76,300) 32 km away, and Naranjito (pop. 34,200) 33 km away.
In San Francisco de Milagro (pop. 133,500) located 41 km from the epicenter, Yaguachi Nuevo (pop. 27,900) 49 km away, Samborondon (pop. 24,100) 49 km away, Ventanas (pop. 46,700) 59 km away, Duran (pop. 167,800) 69 km away, and Guayaquil (pop. 1,952,000) 73 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
