Light magnitude 4.8 earthquake 108 km south of Zigong, China

4.8 quake 10.4 km SSE of Xunchang, China, 13 Nov 3.18 am (GMT +8)
4.8 quake 10.4 km SSE of Xunchang, China, 13 Nov 3.18 am (GMT +8)
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported only 21 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Friday 13 November 2020 at 3.18 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Xunchang (pop. 64,600) located 10 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yibin (pop. 242,100) located 46 km from the epicenter, and Zigong (pop. 690,000) 108 km away.
This story will be updated soon by VolcanoDiscovery. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
