An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred only 26 minutes ago 6 km northwest of La Luz, Mexico, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 15 km beneath the epicenter near La Luz, Villa de Tututepec de Melchor Ocampo, Oaxaca, Mexico, late at night on Thursday 14 January 2021 at 11:39 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In El Ciruelito (pop. 140) located 3 km from the epicenter, and Barrio de la Playa (Tololote) (pop. 20) 3 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Cruz Isabel (Barrio Grande) (pop. 60) located 4 km from the epicenter, La Cañada (pop. 250) 6 km away, San Francisco de Arriba (pop. 210) 6 km away, La Luz (pop. 2,400) 6 km away, San Francisco de Abajo (pop. 440) 7 km away, and Santa Rosa de Lima (pop. 2,200) 10 km away.
