An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred 39 minutes ago 44 km southwest of Pinotepa Nacional, Mexico, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 2 km beneath the epicenter near Pinotepa Nacional, Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, Mexico, early morning on Thursday 4 February 2021 at 1:48 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Callejon de Romulo (pop. 490) located 18 km from the epicenter, Santo Domingo Armenta (pop. 2,600) 24 km away, Santiago Tepextla (pop. 1,400) 25 km away, Corralero (pop. 1,700) 26 km away, El Ciruelo (pop. 2,200) 27 km away, San Nicolas (pop. 3,300) 35 km away, and Pinotepa Nacional (pop. 29,600) 44 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Juan Cacahuatepec (pop. 4,200) located 61 km from the epicenter, and San Pedro Amuzgos (pop. 4,900) 68 km away.
