An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred 35 minutes ago 85 km south of Nishinoomote, Japan, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 21.5 km beneath the epicenter near Nishinoomote, Nishinoomote Shi, Kagoshima, Japan, after midnight on Wednesday 17 February 2021 at 12:57 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Koseda (pop. 2,300) located 65 km from the epicenter, Miyanoura (pop. 6,500) 73 km away, and Nishinoomote (pop. 17,800) 85 km away.
