A moderately shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Chigorodo, Chigorodó, Antioquia, Colombia.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Friday 2 April 2021 at 5:44 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 64 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Riosucio (pop. 7,200) located 20 km from the epicenter, Chigorodo (pop. 48,400) 40 km away, Carepa (pop. 20,600) 49 km away, Apartado (pop. 86,400) 62 km away, Turbo (pop. 50,500) 78 km away, and Dabeiba (pop. 11,500) 88 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
