Just 25 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Minatitlan, Minatitlán, Veracruz, Mexico. The tremor was recorded late at night on Wednesday 7 April 2021 at 11:26 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 143 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In La Concepcion (La Union) (pop. 79, 1 km away), Jaltipan de Morelos (pop. 32,800, 46 km away), Cosoleacaque (pop. 22,500, 49 km away), Minatitlan (pop. 112,000, 50 km away), Acayucan (pop. 50,900, 52 km away), Nanchital de Lazaro Cardenas del Rio (pop. 25,300, 62 km away), Fraccionamiento Ciudad Olmeca (pop. 16,100, 66 km away), and Coatzacoalcos (pop. 236,000, 69 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
