An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 24 minutes ago 65 km northeast of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 203 km beneath the epicenter near San Pedro de Atacama, Provincia de El Loa, Antofagasta, Chile, early afternoon on Tuesday 4 May 2021 at 3:54 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In San Pedro de Atacama (pop. 2,000, 65 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
