An intermediate magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported in the evening near Acayucan, Veracruz, Mexico.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Wednesday 19 May 2021 at 9:12 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 139 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include El Oriente (pop. 200) located 2 km from the epicenter, Sayula de Aleman (pop. 14,000) 27 km away, Texistepec (pop. 9,700) 31 km away, Oluta (pop. 12,700) 33 km away, Acayucan (pop. 50,900) 35 km away, Jaltipan de Morelos (pop. 32,800) 43 km away, Cosoleacaque (pop. 22,500) 51 km away, and Minatitlan (pop. 112,000) 57 km away.
