Just 14 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Tacna, Provincia de Tacna, Peru. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday 29 May 2021 at 4:04 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 2 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Cairire (pop. 18) located 2 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tarata (pop. 3,100) located 46 km from the epicenter, and Chuquitira (pop. 4,200) 53 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chipispaya (pop. 1,900) located 65 km from the epicenter, Quilahuani (pop. 3,200) 73 km away, Tacna (pop. 280,100) 89 km away, and Ilabaya (pop. 9,500) 97 km away.
