A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Taupo, Taupo District, Waikato, New Zealand, was reported only 6 minutes ago by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Thursday 3 June 2021 at 12:23 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Turangi (pop. 3,400) located 19 km from the epicenter, and Taupo (pop. 22,500) 26 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tokoroa (pop. 14,300) located 76 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rotorua (pop. 65,900) located 88 km from the epicenter, Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 88 km away, and Napier City (pop. 56,800) 102 km away.
