The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.0 quake in the United States near Brawley, Imperial County, California, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Friday 11 June 2021 at 9:48 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1.6 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Imperial Junction (pop. 1000) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Calipatria (pop. 7,400) 10 miles away, Westmorland (pop. 2,300) 11 miles away, and Brawley (pop. 25,900) 17 miles away. In Imperial (pop. 17,100, 25 miles away), El Centro (pop. 44,000, 29 miles away), Calexico (pop. 40,100, 37 miles away), and Coachella (pop. 44,600, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
