The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in the Philippines near Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, Caraga, 32 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Monday 14 June 2021 at 12:52 am local time at a shallow depth of 18 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Benito (pop. 2,300) located 4 km from the epicenter, Santa Monica (pop. 2,300) 4 km away, Libas (pop. 3,400) 13 km away, Del Carmen (pop. 4,300) 14 km away, Pilar (pop. 2,400) 16 km away, and Dapa (pop. 8,800) 26 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Socorro (pop. 9,700) located 41 km from the epicenter, and Surigao City (pop. 87,800) 62 km away.
