Just 17 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Friday 9 July 2021 at 4:34 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 13 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Seres (pop. 2,100) located 9 km from the epicenter, and Dipolog City (pop. 93,500) 15 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Dapitan (pop. 50,500) located 27 km from the epicenter, Mahayag (pop. 17,100) 37 km away, and Molave (pop. 21,100) 42 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ozamis City (pop. 93,100) located 64 km from the epicenter, Pagadian (pop. 186,900) 68 km away, and Muricay (pop. 132,100) 69 km away.
