A moderately shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported around noon near Crucecita, Santa María Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Thursday 15 July 2021 at 1:28 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 48 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Miguel Chongos (pop. 470) located 1 km from the epicenter, Merced del Potrero (pop. 2,200) 11 km away, Crucecita (pop. 15,100) 32 km away, Huatulco (pop. 7,400) 41 km away, and San Pedro Pochutla (pop. 13,700) 60 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz (pop. 23,900) located 75 km from the epicenter, Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) 86 km away, and Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 42,100) 86 km away.

Huatulco, Mecico / Light shaking (MMI IV) / 1-2 s : We are on a boat so we miss most earthquakes. We are tied to a dock at Marina Chahue, Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico. Heard a thud and felt it. Then a 2 or 3 small vibrations. | One user found this interesting.
