Just 37 minutes ago, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Katowice, Silesia, Poland. The tremor was recorded early evening on Tuesday, September 14th, 2021, at 7:10 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Katowice (pop. 317,300) located 6 km from the epicenter, Świętochłowice (pop. 55,600) 7 km away, Ruda Śląska (pop. 146,200) 7 km away, Chorzow (pop. 113,400) 8 km away, Siemianowice Śląskie (pop. 73,100) 11 km away, Tychy (pop. 130,000) 11 km away, Bytom (pop. 189,200) 12 km away, and Sosnowiec (pop. 227,300) 12 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Zabrze (pop. 192,200) located 15 km from the epicenter.
