Just 11 minutes ago, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Guayaquil, Cantón Guayaquil, Provincia del Guayas, Ecuador. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Saturday, November 20th, 2021, at 5:06 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 20 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pedro Carbo (pop. 23,400) located 16 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Triunfo (pop. 32,300) located 32 km from the epicenter, Guayaquil (pop. 1,952,000) 48 km away, Duran (pop. 167,800) 50 km away, Samborondon (pop. 24,100) 58 km away, Yaguachi Nuevo (pop. 27,900) 64 km away, San Francisco de Milagro (pop. 133,500) 75 km away, Balzar (pop. 40,100) 76 km away, and La Libertad (pop. 75,900) 79 km away.
