4.7 quake 21 Nov 6:51 pm (GMT +8)
4.7 quake 21 Nov 6:51 pm (GMT +8)
A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Xunchang, Sichuan, China, was reported only 21 minutes ago by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Sunday, November 21st, 2021, at 6:51 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Guandu (pop. 2,100) located 56 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wenshui (pop. 5,500) located 90 km from the epicenter, Xunchang (pop. 64,600) 91 km away, Yibin (pop. 242,100) 110 km away, and Bijie (pop. 77,600) 115 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
