Significant magnitude 5.9 quake hits 22 km northwest of Tanabe, Japan in the morning

5.9 quake 3 Dec 9:28 am (GMT +9)
5.9 quake 3 Dec 9:28 am (GMT +9)
A shallow magnitude 5.9 earthquake was reported in the morning near Tanabe, Tanabe-shi, Wakayama, Japan.
According to Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Friday, December 3rd, 2021, at 9:28 am local time at a shallow depth of 18.7 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Gobō (pop. 27,200) located 10 km from the epicenter, and Tanabe (pop. 69,600) 22 km away.
In Kainan (pop. 43,400) located 40 km from the epicenter, Minato (pop. 375,300) 47 km away, Anan (pop. 55,400) 47 km away, Iwade (pop. 55,600) 53 km away, Izumisano (pop. 100,600) 71 km away, Kobe (pop. 1,528,500) 100 km away, and Osaka (pop. 2,592,400) 105 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
